CORUF - Central Otago Recreational Users Forum

Central Otago Hills

2008 Autumn Forum --

Wednesday 21 May at 7.30 pm

Alexandra Community Hall, Limerick Street, Alexandra

Guest Speaker

Lewis Verduyn, Chairman of the Clutha Mata-Au River Parkway Project

The Clutha River has given us gold, water and electricity in abundance, Lewis says, now it is time to begin conserving its ecosystem. The Clutha is New Zealand's largest and most powerful river. It is famous for its water, its spectacular river-scapes and conservation values, and its Maori, pioneer and gold-rush history. It is facing serious issues, such as subdivision developments, reduced recreational access, loss of farmland, invasive species, and ever-increasing water extraction. The Parkway project seeks to address these by establishing a regional river park with sustainable integrated management, to protect and improve the values of the entire river corridor. The project includes the Clutha River Trail, which will run from Lake Wanaka to the Pacific Ocean, for walking, mountain biking and fishing. Lewis will give an update on the project, and will show some rarely seen slides of a journey on the river on a pioneer log-raft in 1981.

All persons are welcome to attend.

There will be a gold coin donation to cover expenses.

CORUF Forums

The FORUM is a public meeting held twice yearly on an issue of significance, with speakers and discussion. Autumn and Spring were chosen as the two seasons when recreationalists might be most "at home" to addressing issues for the coming seasons.
